The Etowah Indian Mounds Historic Site is located in Cartersville, west of Lake Allatoona. The impressive 54-acre site was home to several thousand Native Americans between 1000 A.D. and 1550 A.D. The site includes six earthen mounds, a plaza, village area, borrow pits and defensive pits.
About 10% of the site has been excavated. Visitors will learn much about the lives of the former inhabitants and their intriguing culture. For example, there is a 63-foot earthen knoll that towers above the area. Experts believe this was a platform for the home of the priest or chief. Nobility were buried in elaborate costumes in another knoll with possessions they were thought to need in the afterlife.
