Red Top Mountain State Park

Red Top Mountain State Park lies (lays?) to the northwest of Atlanta on Lake Allatoona, a 12,000 acre man-made playground.  The name is derived from the red soil in the area that was popular for the mining of abundant iron ore.  The park has still events that celebrate that heritage.

Located across the lake from Allatoona Dam, Red Top Mountain has boat ramps, hiking trails, a nifty visitors center, camping and interesting presentations by people who share their love and knowledge of wildlife and nature.

The Battle of Allatoona Pass was fought on a battlefield that is now within the park.  The 1864 Atlanta Campaign of the American Civil War is commemorated by the Allatoona Pass Civil War Interpretation Trail.   Learn about this historic fight through interpretative signs along the path.
